November 5, 2009 (NEW YORK) – St. Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan held its annual Angelus Award Gala on Wednesday, November 4th at Pier 60 of Chelsea Piers, hosting 1,000 guests and raising more than $1.1 million. Funds raised for the gala will be used to augment and upgrade the operating theaters and other advanced treatment areas to support the hospital’s mission to provide compassionate medical care regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.

The Angelus Award Gala is a time to celebrate those individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the hospital and embody the spirit of St. Vincent’s. It is through their efforts and the generosity of those in attendance that St. Vincent’s has flourished through the years.

Each year, the Angelus Award Gala honors three individuals for their unique contribution to St. Vincent’s Hospital. These year’s honorees were Jerry H. Hodge, Sister Jane Iannucelli, and Dr. John Coppola.

About the Awardees

The Angelus Award, St. Vincent’s most esteemed honor, was presented to Jerry H. Hodge, R. Ph., Chairman, Maxor National Pharmacy Services Corporation. Mr. Hodge has been a steadfast supporter of St. Vincent’s through the years, and his innovative contributions to pharmacy services and healthcare management have had a tangible impact on the thousands of patients the hospital serves every year. He is a visionary leader in the healthcare industry and embodies the mission of St. Vincent’s in all his works.

The Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Award was presented to Sister Jane Iannucelli, vice chairperson of the board of directors and director of sponsorship services for the Sisters of Charity New York. This award is presented to a Sister of Charity who emulates Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton as an advocate for the sick, the poor and the abandoned. Sister Jane serves on a number of boards, including the Catholic Health Association, and has worked with great passion throughout her life as a teacher, social worker, a community builder, a social advocate, and a national leader in Catholic healthcare.

The Saint Vincent de Paul Distinguished Physician Award was given to John Coppola, MD, chief of cardiology at St. Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan. The honor is bestowed upon a physician whose philosophy of patient care reflects the healing ministry of Saint Vincent de Paul, the hospital’s namesake. Dr. Coppola has been at the forefront of cardiac care for 30 years, and is known for his skill, compassion and personal interaction. Dr. Coppola is considered an expert in performing transradial catheterization, a procedure that provides less risk and faster recovery times for patient. He has been honored numerous times for his expertise in cardiovascular disease, critical care medicine and interventional cardiology, and has traveled around the world to share his knowledge with other physicians.
