The ophthalmology residency at St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan has a long tradition of excellence. Founded in 1958 by Dr. Ramon Castroviejo, a pioneer in corneal transplantation, the residency program has enjoyed steady expansion and development. This legacy continues under the chairmanship of Dr. Robert D'Amico, a distinguished corneal surgeon, who succeeded Dr. Castroviejo in 1970. Today, the department includes over 20 ophthalmologists with subspecialty training in cornea, retina, oculoplastic, glaucoma, pediatric, and neuro-ophthalmology.
The department has impressive depth in the subspecialties of ophthalmology, offering clinics for corneal and retinal diseases, glaucoma, pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus problems, ophthalmic plastic surgery, neuro-ophthalmology and contact lens problems.
