If you or a loved ones requires critical care, you can take comfort in knowing that our critical care service is staffed by physicians who are board certified in the specialty as well as by specially trained critical care nurses.Our special care areas have evolved to meet the particular needs of our patients and include over 50 beds. We operate six full-time high-level units and two major "step-down" units.
Our Critical Care Service (CCS) is dedicated to the practice of multidisciplinary critical care medicine. With a long tradition of excellence, our physicians and nurses actively participate in the management of patients in each of the adult intensive care units, which include:
- Medical Intensive Care Unit - A broad range of patients are admitted to this unit, with care delivered under the direction of both the patient's attending physician and the critical care physician.
- Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit - This service cares for patients with head trauma, subarachnoid hemorrhage and elective neurosurgical procedures for intracranial and spinal disorders. Care is co-managed by critical care specialists and the neurosurgical team.
- Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit - This service, which cares for patients recovering from cardiothoracic surgery, is under the direction of the cardiothoracic service with critical care staff serving as consultants.
- Surgical Intensive Care Unit - This service cares for patients recovering from a variety of high-risk surgical procedures and trauma cases. Care is delivered under the direction of critical care staff.
- Coronary Care Unit - Under the direction of the cardiology service, this unit cares for patients with heart problems as well as angioplasty and electrophysiology patients.
- Respiratory Care Unit - This service cares for patients requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation who are potential candidates for weaning. A high rate of success is enjoyed in this unit with nearly 70 percent of patients ultimately being weaned.
