The Center for Minimally Invasive Urologic Surgery and Kidney Stone Prevention
We provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art medical care with an emphasis on treating the whole patient in a compassionate and caring environment. Led by Dr. Michael Grasso, an internationally renowned authority on minimally invasive surgeries for a variety of urologic disorders, our department consists of 18 board certified urologists, each with his or her own areas of clinican and academic expertise.
We are based at two sites on campus and employ two state-of-the-art operating theaters and a new extracorporeal lithotripsy unit. We offer the following specific cutting-edge treatments:
- Minimally invasive procedures to treat urologic malignancies, such as kidney cancer, bladder cancer and prostate cancer.
- A variety of minimally invasive, non-incisional treatments for renal obstruction, stone disease, and other urothelial disorders, including upper urinary tract transitional cell carcinoma.
- A variety of laser therapies to treat bladder and kidney malignancies, stone disease, obstructive uropathy, BPH and prostatism.
- Progressive radiation therapy (brachytheraphy) for prostate cancer, in consort with St. Vincent’s department of radiation therapy. This program is spearheaded by Dr. Tracy Ng, an authority in radiation therapy for prostate cancer.
- Lithotripsy: We offer all aspects of lithotripsy, tailoring the treatment to the patient’s presenting stone burden, composition, and upper urinary tract anatomy.
- Metabolic stone clinic : A comprehensive metabolic stone clinic employing the expertise of urologic surgeons and a nationally renowned nephrologists. Current academic studies are underway to define the causes or urinary tract calculi, develop various prevention and medical treatments, and define the relationship between stone disease and other disorders, such as osteoporosis and renal tubular acidosis.
